Adele in Schiaparelli, Lady Gaga in Gareth Pugh: Celebrities do perform in style

Concerts are meant to wow and impress. The music is one element, of course – but there is also the fashion aspect to get excited over.

When Adele headlined the British Summer Time Hyde Park festival in London on July 1 and 2, she turned it into a fashion extravaganza.

It was a big deal, as it was the British singer’s first public concert in five years. Her outfit choices then made headlines in fashion magazines.

The first night she wore a floor-length velvet gown, complete with long sleeves and a halter neckline by Schiaparelli, a couture design by the fashion house.

She switched to a Louis Vuitton custom dress for night two. It was made from silk mousseline, embroidered with mini-paillettes and sequins.

The two looks are said to really embody her personal style, which has often been described as “old Hollywood glamour”.

Lady Gaga, who is no stranger to weaponising fashion to attract the most attention, also turned heads when she kicked off her Chromatica Ball 18-city concert tour in Dusseldorf, Germany, on July 17.

It was one fantastic outfit to another, which the star changed into between sets.

She opened the show wearing a dramatic Gareth Pugh design. Pugh is a British designer known for his extremely avant-garde creations.

Of the costumes Lady Gaga wore from Pugh, one even saw her bursting out from an armour of sorts. Yes, it took theatrics to the full level.

Lady Gaga also slipped into an Alexander McQueen, said to be one of her favourite go-to labels.

She paraded looks by Christian Lacroix, and even a design by her own sister Natali Germanotta, who owns a label called Topo Studio.

There were several other outfits that, up to now, are still unidentifiable. Worth mentioning is one comprising a leather puff-sleeve top and paper-bag-waist pants that looked actually wearable in real life (by anyone other than Lady Gaga, that is).

Fashion labels and designers are more than happy to pander to a musician’s fashion needs. If a stage costume becomes iconic, the person who creates it gets the glory.

For instance, nobody in the style industry will ever forget Jean-Paul Gaultier for having designed Madonna’s cone bra outfit worn for her Blond Ambition tour concert in 1990.

What about John Galliano? He was tapped by Kylie Minogue to design for her Showgirl Homecoming tour in 2006, her first stage appearance after recovering from breast cancer.

More than just clothes, such designs have become part of pop culture in itself and will forever be remembered.
