Trends come and go. So does one’s personal style as we move from one chapter of our life to another. For Kit Mah, he lets his fashion choices evolve to fit his needs.

The multi-talented artiste has one unchanging rule though – comfort. He prioritises feeling at ease while still being dressed up. To him, confidence is the most important accessory.

Mah, 36, says that the best way to curate a look is going back to the basics. From staples like a T-shirt or plain sneakers, a person can then build up a more vivacious and bold look.

His busy lifestyle in the past saw him switching from one fashion getup to another for different jobs. Now, he tries his hardest to create a fashion “uniform” that he can turn to for different occasions.

What is your favourite or go-to look?

Functional and sleek. I strive to be on top of my work and life. That requires me to look good, so it means wearing something to look good, which still allows me to work in comfort. I do like military and functional apparels. However, to blend into city life, it needs to be more sleek.

What are your three-essential style items?

A fitting white top – not too loose or tight but one that can be layered on with a jacket, or a shirt. I also prefer white shoes as they can be versatile, while still looking nice when paired with either fitted short or pants. I go for slim-tapered casual pants as I feel they are sleek and chic for many occasions.

How has the pandemic changed your style?

Before the MCO, I was always on the go. For over a decade, I was juggling between a corporate job and also taking on gigs in entertainment (modelling, acting, television hosting) and my studies (just completed my master’s programme). Back then, I often transition between different looks within a day according to the events I attended. My car was like my wardrobe filled with shoes and clothes!

My favourite or go-to look right now during the pandemic would be something comfortable and versatile. I switch between jogger pants, dress pants and sweatpants. Always with a nice fitted T-shirt and jacket, or shirt.

I would say that I’m somewhat more minimalist now. I do agree and like the idea behind wearing the same outfit daily, like what Steve Jobs did. However, I still change it up and play around with colours or layers to stay trendy. Whether participating in Zoom calls or doing face-to-face consults or doing my live webinars, they require me to be seen and noticed.

Who is your style icon? What’s your inspiration?

I look to Zac Efron. He always sticks to a reliable “base” from which to build his outfits on.

Give us one style tip, or two

It’s always about the 3 Cs for me when it comes to clothing. It’s about wearing it with the right confidence, having the right cut that complements your body shape or size, and lastly comfort. You can dress comfortably and still look good.
