The more time you spend to perfect your timing, learning your dog’s body language and adapting your skills, the more effectively you can train your dog. Consistency is a big part of the training process.

The American Kennel Club offers tips on the various ways to stay consistent in your dog’s training routine. It’s more than just the routine.

Yes, consistency in your dog’s routine is important, but you must also look at the content of your interactions.

Reflect on whether you are using your cues the same way each time, whether you are habitually rewarding good behavior and enforcing the same rules of the household no matter the circumstances.

It is important that your dog knows what is being asked of them and that it stays the same each time.

Consistency is one of the most important aspects to effective dog training. It speeds up the training process and fosters confidence in you and your dog. It is important to make sure the entirety of your household is on the same page about rules.

If there are mixed signals and inconsistency in rules, it can create anxiety for your dog. Being aligned on what rules you enforce for your dog can help prevent behaviors like barking or jumping, as these are commonly caused by your dog’s confusion or their reaction to your unpredictability.

A common mistake while training your dog is being consistent in the wrong places. For example, when you let your dog jump on you while wearing your jeans but not your work clothes. The behavior still gets your dog what it wants, even if it is only on occasion.

Or if you always have your training sessions in the same place, you can’t expect your dog to behave outside of that location. It is important to pay close attention to the mechanics and cues, rates of reinforcement and keeping routines consistent between family members. – American Kennel Club/Tribune News Service
