Cats vs bugs: Watch out for these creepy crawlies if your cat likes the garden

Cats love to be out and about, and anything that moves is just begging to be chased.

Sadly, some creatures can fight back. If you are walking your kitty, here’s what to look out for.

Bees and wasps

Bees are vital for keeping trees and flowers healthy and fertile. Wasps are nature’s insecticide, killing aphids and other insects. Thankfully, they will mostly leave you alone. However, if you scare them, or if your kitty pats them, they may sting.

Bees die when they sting, so their barbed stinger can be used only once.

Wasps have a smooth stinger so they can sting repeatedly. Both though create a similar reaction: lots of red-hot pain. Also, allergies are common.

If you have bees in your garden, call 019-6648081 and ask Persatuan Penyelamat Lebah Malaysia (MY Bee Savior Associations) to help move them.

It’s free, and you will be helping your community!

Fire ants

These ants have a red front and dark brown black rear. They’re small but aggressive, also, their sting is very painful.

It’s like being seared with a hot lance and as they tend to attack in groups, it’s rather nasty.

Aside from the pain and swelling, you and your kitty may be allergic too. So if you have these, be careful and ask an exterminator for advice.

Centipedes

Some of the bigger centipedes like the Malaysian Tiger Centipede has a venomous bite that kills spiders, house lizards and even small mice.

They can hurt a cat – as well as human babies and little children. So if you have these, be careful and again, ask an exterminator for advice.
