5 tips for building your cat the purr-fect home

Most pet owners are happy to share their living space with their furry companions – a scratching post in the corner, a feeding bowl by the kitchen, maybe even a basket by the sofa. But for Ahmad Rashidi Abdul Rashid, 30, that simply wasn’t enough.

When the number of cats under his care grew to 11, the online entrepreneur from Kuantan, Pahang, decided to take things a step further. Inspired by his rescued, rehomed and adopted cats – a mix of British Shorthairs, mixed breeds and domestic cats – he decided to build them a space of their very own.

What started during the Covid-19 lockdown, when he first began feeding hungry street cats, eventually led to a one-of-a-kind cat home. Designed with airflow, play zones and cosy corners, the space keeps his feline family active, comfortable and happy.

Whether you wish to build a new home for your cats or just make your existing space more cat-friendly, here are some practical tips to get you started.

1. Prioritise airflow

Good ventilation keeps things cool and prevents odours.

2. Plan your zones

Keep feeding and litter areas separate to promote hygiene.

3. Think vertical

Cats love to climb so add steps, perches and wall-mounted shelves.

4. Use durable, washable surfaces

Accidents happen, so choose easy-to-clean materials.

5. Inspire yourself

Browse online for ideas, but customise based on your space and cats’ personalities.
