Japanese firm Kengo Kuma and Associates was recently honoured as Architects of the Year under The Iconic Awards 2020: Innovative Architecture.
Organised by the German Design Council, the Iconic Awards recognises the best architecture and design solutions internationally.
Winning the title of Interior Designers of the Year is Alberto Caiola Studio while the Architects’ Client of the Year was Adidas AG.
The winners will be feted on Oct 5 in Munich. Each of the special awards comes with a €10,000 (RM49,800) in prize money.
Alongside the special awards, the jury also saluted the best works in various categories including Architecture, Interior and Product. Innovative Material.
Architects of the Year
Japanese architect Kengo Kuma is currently one of the most influential designers of contemporary buildings in the world. Some of his recent iconic projects include the V&A Dundee, Britain, The Exchange in Sydney, Australia, and Ochanomizu in Tokyo, Japan. The artful use of light in combination with airy facade structures gives the first two buildings an ethereal vibe.
Interior Designers of the Year
Alberto Caiola’s works include the extravagant Crash Baggage @ La Fayette retail space as well as the ancient Greece-inspired rooftop club NYZ, both in Shanghai, China. He “removes the boundaries between classic interior design and art installation in an extremely individual way”.
Architects’ Client of the Year
The Architects’ Client of the Year title, which is presented to a project client that supports a holistic understanding of architecture, was given to Adidas AG this year. Adidas hired Behnisch Architekten and Cobe Copenhagen, two renowned architecture firms to design two buildings for its head office employees.
They were built shortly after each other on the World of Sports campus in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria.
