Do my toes look weird?

Many people can easily ignore the fact that their toes are misaligned as long as they are not suffering from any pain.

But if you have painful pressure points or your toes are causing you general discomfort, then it is time to seek medical advice to determine what can be done about crooked and misaligned toes.

Typical toe deformities include:

> Bunions

Also known as hallux valgus, this condition involves your big toe tilting towards the outer edge of your foot, says orthopaedist Dr Thomas Schneider from the Joint Clinic in Gundelfingen, Germany.

The bunion protrudes noticeably on the inner side of the foot.

> Tailor’s bunion or bunionette

This is essentially the opposite.

The little toe tilts towards the inner side of the foot, and the ball of the foot protrudes noticeably on the outer side.

> Hammer toe and claw toe

These involve deformities where the toes are bent, and often accompany hallux valgus.

Claw or hammer toes are often triggered by improper footwear, Dr Schneider notes.

Wearing shoes that are too tight or too small can constrict your toes, which may lead to deformities over time.

High heels exacerbate the problem.

Genetic predisposition, accidents and other foot deformities you may have, such as splay foot, can also influence the alignment of your toes.

Treatment depends on how advanced the deformity is.

According to Dr Schneider, hallux valgus can be treated up to a certain stage with insoles and foot exercises.

For hammer or claw toes, this may involve using additional strapping bandages.

If your symptoms do not improve and the deformity is already advanced, surgery is often unavoidable.

A good starting point to taking better care of your feet is by wearing shoes that provide room for the toes while still offering support, says Dr Schneider.

The sole should be flat and flexible to allow your foot to roll naturally while you are walking.

A non-slip sole with a good grip and a stable heel are also important to give you support while you are walking.

Additionally, small exercises can help keep your feet mobile and well-circulated.
