SLE stands for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. It is an autoimmune disease. This means a condition that occurs when the patient's own immune system becomes hyperactive. It then turns on itself, and produces antibodies that attack and destroy the patient’s own body tissues. This results in inflammation of major body organs.
