Treat your spouse right

Counselling psychologist and MY Confidential Association of Private Counsellors founder Johana Johari offers suggestions on how couples can maintain the spark in their relationship.

Be in tune with each other’s feelings

A couple needs to be in tune with each others’ feelings and behave accordingly. Try not to hurt or offend each other through the things you say or do.

Spend time doing things together

Make time to spend intimate moments together as this will create a bond and spark your love for each other.

Touch and show affection

Physical displays of affection - such as a kiss or a hug - are very important in a relationship. This rekindles the love in a marriage.

Help with the housework

Housework isn’t for wives alone and husbands must do their bit with the cleaning and chores. When a couple is considerate of each other, it makes them more appreciative of one another. A husband who helps his wife with the chores will find that she has more time for him.

Communicate with each other

Not just deep discussions but lighthearted conversations are important in a marriage. Discuss stories, the day's events, and laugh and joke with your own spouse.

Often, people laugh and joke with their friends instead of their spouse but that shouldn’t be the case. Your entertainment and amusement, your laughter and fun should be first and foremost with your own spouse.

Have fun together

Exercise and have a good time together. When a couple can have fun together, love grows.

Respect each other’s privacy

Respect for each other’s boundaries and privacy is vital. Moments with your spouse are private so do not discuss nor reveal their personal details to others because it will break the trust in a relationship and result in you losing him/her.

Look your best for each other

It’s important to dress up for each other, and not just for special occasions. Often, a wife only dresses up on special occasions and the husband doesn't really take much care over their appearance, nor even make the effort to be neat and tidy. Make the effort to look your best for each other, and celebrate each other!
