February is the month of love, with Valentine’s Day and also Chap Goh Mei (the 15th day of Chinese New Year, also known as ‘Chinese Valentine’s Day'), but singles aren’t forgotten. It can be a time of personal growth with things that you can do during this time too.

Paint and sip

When you’re single, you’ve more time to pursue your hobbies and interests. This is also a good opportunity to make new friends.

For those who like art, sign up for an art or craft class with your friends or even by yourself. And if you like wine, there are also paint and sip sessions where you can drink some wine during your art session. Non-alcoholic beverages are also provided by most art centres.

Attend a concert

It has been said that music soothes the soul because it has been proven to increase the level of mood-boosters such as oxytocin and serotonin in your brain. Oxytocin, which is known as the “love hormone”, also increases feelings of positivity, calmness and lessens anxiety.

Whether you prefer classical or rock music, attending a small music performance or an online concert can be a good way to de-stress and lift your mood.

Movie marathon

Whether you prefer to go to the cinema or stay at home, a movie marathon session would be fun. You can even invite a few friends along but be mindful of the Covid-19 SOPs during this time.

If you’re at home with just your pet, then prepare some snacks and sit back for a relaxing session.

Be healthy

Make it a point to be healthy. Go for a jog or walk at a nearby park, or take up a new sport – whether it’s muay thai, tennis, squash or others. Not only will you look but feel better too.

Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts the mood as well as reduces depression and stress. When you exercise, chemicals called endorphins which trigger a positive feeling are released into the body, and you’ll have an energised outlook on life.

Exercising also boosts your self-esteem because you’ll look and feel better.

If you wish, you can also try eating organic or vegan food because good health is a combination of both exercise and nutrition.

Volunteer

Become a volunteer. Embark on a cause that is close to your heart – whether it’s environmental conservation, visiting an orphanage or children’s shelter, preparing and distributing food aid for those in need, or animal rescue.

Studies show that volunteering increases one’s happiness level because it reduces stress, increases one’s self worth from doing something nice for someone, and promotes a general feeling of calmness and well-being.

Spa day

Besides being relaxing, going for a spa has many health benefits.

There are many treatments offered by a spa, including facials, massage, manicures, pedicures and other body treatments such as scrubs, wraps and aromatherapy.

Going to a spa is great for both physical and mental health. Depending on the treatment, physical benefits include improving circulation and reducing blood pressure, plus your skin will glow, while inner benefits include stress reduction, improved mood, and boosted confidence.
