Starchild: Malaysian children want to enjoy trick or treat on Halloween

Jodie Tan Li Juen, 12

Many Starchild readers look forward to Halloween. It is a time for scares, fun and candies. Although Halloween is observed around the world on Sunday Oct 31, is not widely celebrated here though some have parties to mark the occasion.

Our young readers have sent in letters on the topic, Halloween. Here’s what they had to say.

“I like Halloween best because it is spooky. Kids get to play trick or treat with friends and families. It’s a time of fun and candies,” writes Norlick Titi, six.

Sophie Yap Jyn Qing, eight, thinks Halloween is fun, especially the idea of trick or treating. “Decorations are hung up, such as bats, owls, spider webs, skeletons, jack-o-lanterns and glow in the dark slime.”

Younger sibling Claire Yap Jyn Wei, six, wants to go trick or treating on Halloween. “You go to the neighbours’ houses, ring their bells, and you will get treats like candies and a lot of other sweets. In the night the witches come out to fly, and everyone decorates their house with scary things like Jack-o-lanterns to scare others.”

Big sister Jodie Tan Li Juen, 12, loves seeing malls decorated for Halloween. “The decorations are not spooky as what I see in books and movies. I love the carved pumpkins the most. Some put the candles inside to make it look like lanterns.” - Compiled by Sheela Chandran
