New feature set to roll out soon will allow sites and search terms to be blocked.
CURRENTLY in beta testing and called “Supervised User”, the feature will enable parents to monitor and keep control over their children’s Internet use.
As well as being able to block or allow access to specific web addresses, the feature ensures that a browsing history is always active so concerned parents can see where their offspring’s surfing is taking them.
The system also means that the option to turn off filtered searching in Google can be overridden.
The announcement was made in a Chrome blogpost by Software Engineer and surf instructor Pam Greene, who also explained that the motivation behind the new features is to keep families safe and how, when applied to a Chromebook – the affordable notebooks that use Google’s Chrome OS as an operating system – the improvements will be even more pronounced.
“Let’s say you’ve recently purchased the new HP Chromebook 11 and want to share it with your son. He’ll be able to use your Chromebook as a supervised user. This means once you’ve created a supervised user for him on your Chromebook, you’ll be able to visit chrome.com/manage to review a history of web pages he has visited, determine sites that you want to allow or block, and manage permissions for any blocked websites he has requested to view,” explains Greene.
Along with tablets, Chromebooks are increasingly seen as ideal high-tech tools for education so it’s good to see that Google is taking steps to keep the next generation safe and put parents’ minds at ease.
In August, in a similar move, Apple announced that it was introducing teen iTunes accounts so that school students could download a limited, curated set of apps to tablets for educational purposes.
Parents interested in testing the features in beta before its official launch can go to the Google Chromebook support page and follow the installation instructions. – AFP Relaxnews
