In a move to make local entertainment more accessible, Astro is introducing Astro X3, a new streaming-first service that gives audiences instant access to live TV and on-demand content without the need for installation.

At a press conference on July 7, Astro Group chief executive officer Henry Tan said Astro X3 allows users to start streaming immediately on compatible smart TVs, smartphones and streaming devices with just a stable Internet connection.

Launching on July 20, Astro X3 will offer 12-month contract plans starting from RM39.99 per month.

Depending on the selected package, subscribers can enjoy a mix of live TV channels, on-demand entertainment, sports content and more.

A no-contract subscription option is also expected to go live later in December, offering viewers greater flexibility in choosing their preferred plan.

Alongside the new streaming service, Astro also unveiled its upcoming slate of films, dramas and live entertainment programmes.

For live entertainment, audiences can look forward to talent reality shows like Big Stage Rocketfuel, Astro Star Quest 2026 – The Next Wave, Astro Classic Golden Melody Singing Competition 2026 and Kilauan Emas Selebriti.

The film lineup includes Kudrat 1968, a prequel to the popular local series Projek: High Council, and Hak: Tuntut Atau Tunduk, which explores themes of human rights.

A major highlight is Terbang, directed by Chiu Keng Guan, which chronicles the inspiring journey of Karamjit Singh – the first Malaysian and Asian to win an international rally world title.

Local actor Irfan Zaini, who portrays Karamjit, said he felt a responsibility to introduce the national rally icon's story to a younger generation.

“I felt a need to share this story with the people, especially Gen Zs, who might not know who this Malaysian hero is,” he said at the press conference.

Irfan added that portraying a real-life figure came with a different set of challenges compared to his previous roles.

“Whenever I land a role, I’d sit down with the director to discuss how the character should behave and whatnot.

“But this is a living legend, so it was quite challenging to portray him,” he said.

On the drama front, Astro will roll out original productions such as Bulan Henti Bicara, Maara And Marmadesam, Wolong: The Mastermind and more.

Another featured title is Premier League: I Love You, starring Kamal Adli and Malaysian footballer Intan Serah.

The rom-com follows a group of passionate Arsenal fans whose shared love for football eventually leads to romance.

Filmed in the United Kingdom, the series features appearances from prominent figures from the Premier League and is expected to appeal to football enthusiasts in Malaysia.

Kamal, a huge Manchester United fan, joked that he originally accepted the role almost instantly after assuming filming would take place at Old Trafford – the football club’s home stadium.

“But when I read the script, I was like, ‘What happened to Manchester?’

“I was later told that there were some issues, so changes had to be made,” he said, laughing.

Despite the amusing switch, Kamal made it clear that filming in the UK and at Emirates Stadium – Arsenal’s home ground – was an unforgettable experience.

“I got to meet the players and even watch football matches for free,” he said.

Intan – who makes her acting debut in the series – shared the same enthusiasm, describing the overseas shoot as a memorable experience.

“I previously worked with Astro to film two seasons of KL To PL (a Premier League-themed travel and reality show).

“However, this one is different because it’s a drama, so I’m really excited for it,” she said.
