Astro banking on streaming-first strategy

PETALING JAYA: Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd is betting that making its service easier to access, while doubling down on exclusive local content and live sports, will help arrest years of subscriber decline with the launch of Astro X3.

The new streaming-first offering, unveiled yesterday, removes many of the traditional barriers associated with subscribing to Astro.

Customers can sign up through their mobile devices and start streaming immediately via the Astro app on compatible smart TVs, without requiring a decoder, satellite dish or installation appointment.

The move represents Astro’s latest effort to reposition itself in an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape dominated by global streaming platforms and piracy. Group chief executive Henry Tan said Astro X3 reflects changing consumer viewing habits and the company’s commitment to making its services simpler, more accessible and more flexible.

“At Astro, our focus has always been on connecting Malaysians with the content that resonates most with them – from compelling local stories and live entertainment to world-class live sports and global content.

“As viewing habits continue to evolve, Astro X3 reflects our commitment to making Astro simpler and more accessible than ever before,” he said at the launch event.

Unlike international streaming services that primarily compete on global content, Astro is banking on what it believes remains its biggest competitive advantage – exclusive local entertainment and premium live sports.

This content strategy is central to Astro’s new “fandom” proposition, where it seeks to attract audiences through content they are passionate about rather than competing purely on the size of its content library.

Tan said Astro remains the only platform bringing together premium local dramas, live entertainment and live sports under a single subscription, giving it a clear point of differentiation in an increasingly crowded streaming market.

He acknowledged that many consumers perceive Astro as cumbersome to subscribe to because of installation requirements and hardware. Astro X3 is designed to eliminate those pain points by allowing customers to start watching within minutes.

“It is Astro’s response to the streaming-first world. It is also our response to people who say, Astro is difficult to subscribe to. It is the easiest way to enjoy Astro.

“Sign up, go on your phone, instantly you stream after that. No appointment, no need for other things,” Tan explained.

He believes this could help attract younger, digital-first households, apartment dwellers and former subscribers who may have been discouraged by the traditional satellite setup.

“We are giving people options so customers can choose,” Tan said, adding that Astro One remains suitable for larger households, while Astro X3 is designed for young families seeking a hassle-free streaming experience without installation or wiring.
