Malaysia's famous cop show, the 'Gerak Khas' series, is back to excite the local fans through TVS

After more than two decades of making history in the local drama landscape and five years of leaving fans longing, a name that has become part of Malaysia's television identity is now shaking up the screen again.

The police drama franchise synonymous with action, bravery, and integrity, Gerak Khas, opens a new chapter through "Gerak Khas 2.0," celebrated with an exclusive premiere at TGV Suria KLCC recently.

Produced by Sarawak Media Group (SMG) and Skop Productions under the touch of legendary director Datuk Dr. Yusof Haslam, and for the first time aired by TVS, Gerak Khas 2.0 not only revives an iconic franchise but also elevates it to a new dimension through fresher storytelling, larger production scale, and narratives that resonate with the current reality of Malaysia.

Since its introduction in 1999, Gerak Khas has recorded 20 seasons and 1,054 episodes, thereby solidifying its position as one of the most influential television dramas in the country's history. Its recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest-running prime-time drama in Malaysia serves as proof of its influence and legacy that continues to endure across generations.

Now, after Gerak Khas: The Finale concluded in 2021, the series returns with a more contemporary approach without sacrificing the essence that makes it a timeless work. With more complex crime threats, deeper conflicts, and more cinematic visuals, Gerak Khas 2.0 is ready to usher in a new era for this renowned franchise.

Gerak Khas 2.0 takes viewers on a high-risk mission led by DCP Datuk Helmi (played by Datuk Dr. Yusof Haslam) together with Inspector Anding (played by Anding Indrawani) and the Special Operations Unit in an effort to dismantle an organised crime syndicate.

What started as an operation to combat a drug syndicate eventually expanded into a larger investigation when the country was shocked by a mysterious cyber attack that crippled the national communication system.

The investigation trail led this elite team to the existence of Black Hydra, a high-tech crime syndicate operating covertly and systematically. At the same time, they also unravel the mystery of the disappearance of the national communication expert, Dr. Hariz, whose loyalty is in question.

Behind the thrilling action and high-risk operations, Gerak Khas 2.0 also delves into the emotional conflicts of its characters, particularly Inspector Anding's struggle to protect his sister, Erina, from falling into the world of crime. The combination of personal conflicts, betrayal within the team, sabotage, and enemies who are always one step ahead makes each episode thrilling, before leading to the revelation that Black Hydra is just a part of a much larger criminal network.

As a highly anticipated revival, Gerak Khas 2.0 brings together many iconic faces that have shaped the identity of this franchise for over two decades. Among them are Datuk Dr. Yusof Haslam himself, Datuk Hans Isaac, Erra Fazira, C. Kumaresan, SAC (B) Datuk Shaharon Anuar, Deen Maidin, Salina Saibi, and Tisha Shamsir.

At the same time, this series also introduces a lineup of new-generation actors such as Anding Indrawani, Nabiha Aimi, Emily Elizabeth, Afiq Muiz, Fezrul Khan, Zen Ng, Meynillen Thamil Selvan, and Sarawak-born talent Marzella Sigai, thereby creating a continuity between the loyal fans of Gerak Khas and the current generation of viewers.

One of the most significant innovations in Gerak Khas 2.0 is the selection of Sarawak as one of the main storytelling locations. For the first time in the history of this franchise, East Malaysia is not just a filming location, but plays an important role in the development of the storyline.

Set against the beauty of Kuching and its surroundings, this series introduces a new dimension that enriches the visual identity and narrative of Gerak Khas 2.0. This approach not only provides a broader storytelling space but also reflects the aspiration to highlight more inclusive stories and represent the diversity of Malaysia's landscapes and society.

The production and broadcasting of Gerak Khas 2.0 marks another significant achievement in TVS's journey to strengthen its position as a national broadcaster. As a free-to-air television channel under the Sarawak Media Group (SMG), TVS can be watched on Channel 122 on MYTV, Astro, and Unifi TV, as well as streamed live through the TVS INSPIRE app. Since its launch on October 10, 2020, TVS has continued to grow as a broadcasting platform for the current generation.
