JAKARTA: (Bernama) Indonesian authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and stay at least two kilometres away from the active crater of Anak Krakatau following an eruption on Thursday (Oct 8) evening.

The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) said the eruption occurred at 6.28pm local time, although the height of the eruption column could not be observed.

Lampung’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) subsequently confirmed that the eruption had ended.

"Remain calm and vigilant. Observe the two-kilometre exclusion zone, follow official information from PVMBG and share only verified information,” it said in a social media post.

Anak Krakatau remains at Level II, the second-lowest level in Indonesia’s four-tier volcanic alert system.

Its alert status was lowered from Level III on Sept 21 following a decline in volcanic activity, although authorities have continued to warn of potential hazards, including ejected volcanic rocks and heavy ashfall.

The volcano had also erupted twice on Monday. - Bernama
