Hong Kong actress Teresa Cheung has opened up about her past marriage with renowned singer Kenny Bee, which lasted from 1988 to 1999.

In a recent interview with Hong Kong media, Cheung, 62, said she regrets marrying Bee, 72, so early in life, adding that she "trapped" herself by settling down so soon.

"I was completely lovestruck. I went against my parents' objections and married purely for love, but that relationship ended in divorce," said the actress, who tied the knot when she was 24.

While Cheung didn't shed a tear over the divorce itself, she admitted she was pained that her two children were unable to grow up in a complete family.

She also claimed that Bee had once denied her the right to visit their children, saying: "I couldn't even see them when I wanted to. It's almost as if they had been hidden away. I wasn't a qualified mother, but I had my reasons."

According to HK01, Cheung's daughter has avoided speaking about her biological mother, while her son once publicly said he wanted to sever ties with the Cheung family altogether.

Cheung also revealed that the only time she cried after the divorce was when she was unable to get in contact with her children during Christmas.

"I was busy running my fashion boutique at the time and happened to have a day off during the festive season, so I booked a stay at (a hotel) to spend Christmas with my children.

"However, my calls went unanswered and I wasn't able to locate them," she said, adding that she eventually broke down afterwards.

For the record, Bee divorced Cheung in 1999 when he discovered her having an affair with billionaire businessman Edmund Chan.

To make matters worse, the pair fell into debt after a failed Hong Kong real estate investment.

It’s understood they borrowed some HK$154mil (RM80mil) in 1996 to invest in property, but their outstanding debt rose to HK$250mil (RM129mil) after the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Bee remarried in 2014 to a non-celebrity named Fan-chiang Su-zhen, while Cheung has stayed single ever since.
