Malaysian-born comedian Ronny Chieng has officially become a United States citizen.

In a YouTube video on April 6, the 39-year-old was seen engaging with fans on his Daily Show programme when renowned actor Bill Murray, 74, made an appearance.

“They said that you’re very excited today because today you just found out that you have become an American citizen,” Murray said as he stepped on stage.

The Ghostbusters star then gave Chieng a friendly pat on the back and a playful salute before making his way off the stage.

“It’s a crazy experience to become a US citizen on the day you’re supposed to interview Bill Murray,” Chieng said in the clip.

The Crazy Rich Asians actor, using his signature wit, then recalled his experience during the naturalisation interview, describing it as “very difficult”.

“They ask you like 100 questions. Their questions … I bet none of you can (expletive) answer. I had to memorise how many colonies there were, the states and who’s the president right now,” he said.

Born in Johor Baru, Chieng went to school in Singapore before enrolling at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

He kickstarted his comedy career in 2009 and has since made waves in projects such as Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Megan, Interior Chinatown and more.
