Taiwanese celebrity Cocco Wu has accused her boyfriend, fellow actor Chao Chunya, of physical and verbal abuse.

According to reports, Wu, 41, had attended a party with friends on March 13 and was later driven home by Chao, 46.

It’s understood that an argument broke out between the pair, and Chao had struck Wu, leaving her with bruises on the forehead and scratches on the neck.

The actress later lodged a police report at the Zhonghe Police Station in Taipei.

On March 25, Wu took to social media to share a lawyer’s letter, in which she accused Chao of abuse and emotional blackmail throughout their relationship.

According to the letter, Wu and Chao have been acquainted for several years but only began dating in July 2024.

“I never expected during the relationship that I’d be subjected to continuous verbal abuse, emotional blackmail and physical violence from Mr. Chao. Not only did it cause me physical harm, but it also became a nightmare I struggled to escape,” she said.

Wu added that although she had once excused Chao’s behaviour and even tried to help him control his emotions, she could no longer condone his actions.

Referring to the March 13 incident, Wu said Chao’s actions have caused “severe damage” to both her body and mind.

She also urged the public to give her the space and time to heal during this period and to refrain from making speculations, as the case has now entered the judicial process.

“No one should be subjected to any form of violence. I hope everyone can love and take good care of themselves,” she said.

Chao has since admitted to the allegations in an Instagram post, acknowledging his bad temper and lack of self-control.

“I don’t know how to love – I’ll say unpleasant words and react aggressively. This is very bad and unhealthy. I have no self-reflection at all,” he said.

Chao, known for his performance in the 2010 drama Rookie’s Diary, added that he feels “regretful” and “ashamed” for ever harming Wu.

He also apologised for his toxic behaviour, saying: “My bright personality turned out to be fake. Domestic violence is an invisible sharp blade. I’m the terrible perpetrator, and what’s more terrifying is that the victim is Ms Wu. I need to be punished. I’m really sorry.”
