Former Hong Kong actress Amy Yip was recently honoured with the Most Iconic Actress of the 80s Era laurel by the Malaysia Dato Foundation, which celebrates the contributions of various individuals in their respective fields.

In an interview with Hong Kong media, Yip, famous for her roles in Category III films in the 1980s and 1990s, said she was quite surprised but grateful to clinch the award on Jan 5.

“I had already returned to Hong Kong on the day of the ceremony, so I recorded my acceptance speech in advance.

“I’m waiting for the award to be sent to Hong Kong, so I can display it at home and admire it whenever I like,” the 58-year-old said.

Yip then reflected on her entrepreneurial journey, noting that while she had previously co-invested in a restaurant with friends, venturing into the hotel industry was new territory.

“It has been a great learning experience. I’ve realised that investing in hotels is no simple feat.

“Thankfully, I received help from many friends, which reaffirmed my belief that having good people around is the key to success in business,” she added.

The former actress also provided an update on her durian-themed establishment in Penang, which is touted as the first of its kind in South-East Asia.

Yip had previously opened her boutique hotel, The Leith, also in Penang, in August 2024. She plans to open two more hotels in the state.

“I’ve recently invested in my second hotel in Malaysia, called Durian Hotel, which is currently under construction,” she said.
