Hong Kong actor Sean Lau has been happily married to former Miss Hong Kong winner Amy Kwok since 1998.

The couple is admired as a model pair in the city’s entertainment scene.

In a recent interview with actress Carol Cheng, Lau recounted the first time he crossed paths with Kwok, 57, revealing that he bumped into her while the latter was rehearsing for a show.

“She was dancing with Lawrence Cheng onstage. Seeing such a beautiful girl, of course I liked her,” the 60-year-old said.

Lau shared that while he harboured feelings for Kwok during their first collaboration in the 1992 drama The Greed Of Man, he remained professional and focused solely on his work.

“We only got together after some time,” he added.

Lau, who has won multiple Best Actor awards, went on to reminisce about a particularly amusing incident from his pursuit of Kwok.

“I once asked her out for a drink, and she questioned why I wanted to see her. She even assumed I was trying to borrow money from her,” he recalled.

As for his proposal to Kwok, Lau admitted that it wasn’t an elaborate affair, and he didn’t follow the tradition of getting down on one knee, as often seen in films.

“I simply asked her, ‘Why don’t we just get married?’” he said.

Lau added that Kwok had played a significant role in making him a better person.

Not only has she helped him improve his temper, but she has also taught him the importance of communication.

“I’m no longer a loner. I used to go for months without calling my mother while filming, but now I know how to care for someone, communicate and be more understanding,” he said.

Lau praised his wife for her easygoing nature and loyalty, adding: “She will never hurt me. She’s the kind of person that everyone can accept.”

Kwok made her acting debut in 1985 and gradually retired from the spotlight after tying the knot.

The pair, who has no children, previously revealed that mutual trust is the key to a happy and lasting marriage.
