Harry Styles may be king of the hill these days when it comes to pop music, but the As It Was singer is by no means the new King of Pop, says Michael Jackson’s son, Prince Jackson.
The 25-year-old progeny of the late music icon was reacting to a magazine recently bestowing the title on Styles, the Britain-born singer-songwriter.
“Harry Styles is an incredible artiste and he’s got his own genre and he’s definitely an amazing artiste. But the ‘King of Pop’ was a moniker that really my dad earned in a time that the access to information, the access to popularity and fame wasn’t as easily accessible as it is today,” Jackson, 25, told Good Morning Britain.
Styles, 28, who is slowly filling his film resume as well with starring roles in Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman, was dubbed the new King of Pop in August, when Rolling Stone UK announced him as its October/November cover star.
Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 at age 50, “is the King of Pop, will always be the King of Pop,” said Prince. “And it’s not something that you can ever take away because we’ve just evolved so much as a society that those same factors will never be the same.”
Prince isn’t the only Jackson to weigh in on whether Styles should be crowned pop royalty following Rolling Stone’s proclamation.
“There is no new King of Pop. You don’t own the title @RollingStone, and you didn’t earn it, my uncle did,” Taj Jackson, Michael’s nephew, tweeted at the time. “Decades of dedication and sacrifice. The title has been retired. No disrespect to @Harry_Styles, he’s mega talented. Give him his own unique title.” – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
