Malaysian artiste Meer Nash sings in Malay, English, Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese

Multilingual performer Meer Nash hopes to reach more listeners with his music.

With 122,000 – and growing – followers on Instagram, there’s no denying that Meer Nash’s popularity is steadily growing.

The singer, actor and host is able to converse and perform effortlessly in Malay, English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese.

Thus far, the boyish Universal Music artiste has released seven singles, including Jauh which has over 230,000 views on YouTube. He recently released his latest single, Kembali.

Born on Nov 20, 1995, Muhamad Shahmeer Mohd Nasrul first got a taste of fame when he finished second place at the 16th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students in Beijing, China in 2017.

The annual competition, organised by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, promotes the development of Chinese education overseas and enhancement of students’ understanding of the language.

“Overall, the experience I had in China was unforgettable and I enjoyed every second of it!” reminisced Meer Nash.

“My parents sent me to a Chinese school since kindergarten so speaking Mandarin isn’t a problem for me at all.”

The Penangite recently returned to his hometown for an event to promote a homegrown snack.

He also participated in a shoot with fellow artiste Nicole Lai.

“Since Penang is my hometown, I was so happy and excited about the shoot. It was really fun as as we got to play tourist and explore places that I have not been before.”

What was the biggest lesson you learnt during the pandemic? To appreciate every project while you have it. And always give my best as if it’s my last job.

Personally, I also treasured the time spent with family. I hate that I have to take a lot of precautions and tests before meeting my loved ones.

All I want to do is protect them at all costs at the moment. I do miss the simpler times.

How has your artistic journey been thus far?

Honestly, I’ve faced a lot of problems throughout the journey. None of my family member is in this business so I don’t have anyone to ask for advise. But they do always support me unconditionally.

All of the experiences I have been through makes me who I am today.

What’s your advice to younger people who want to follow in your footsteps?

Be fearless by willing to try new things. Don’t say no before trying. You’ll never know your limits until you try.

What do you love most about your job?

I would say the entire process. From getting to the location, the makeup process, soundcheck, practise to the actual performance on stage, I love every bit of it, truly.

What are your hopes for the rest of 2022?

I hope my music can reach more listeners and that people can actually relate to it. I am a perfectionist so I take every detail very seriously.

And I hope that I can continue making music. That really fills up a huge part of my life.

Who is your biggest inspiration in showbiz and why?

Taylor Swift. She is a great performer with great showmanship on stage.

She’s a great songwriter and storyteller; you can literally picture a scene in your head when you listen to her songs. She’s perfect to me.
