Howard University, located in Washington DC, the United States, shared on Twitter that its College of Fine Arts has officially been renamed after its past student and late actor Chadwick Boseman.
“Yesterday, the letters were installed over the now official Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts” tweeted the school on Sept 3. It was first announced back in May that the performing and visual arts school would be renamed after the Black Panther star who passed away a year ago after a four-year battle against colon cancer, at the age of 43.
Boseman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in directing in 2000. During his time, the university had made the decision to fold its College of Fine Arts into the College of Arts & Science. The Marvel actor had led a protest against this absorption.
It wasn’t until 2018 when it was finally declared that the performing and visual arts school would be returning to independence, with actress Phylicia Rashad as the dean. It was also the same year Boseman gained global stardom through his portrayal of King T’Challa in Black Panther.
The historically black university also shared in the tweet how much of an icon the actor has become in his own right and had left “an immeasurable legacy for the next generation.”
Fans of the late movie star can catch him on screen one final time in Marvel’s new TV series What If...?. The second episode features Boseman who voiced an alternate version of Black Panther.
