The new Korean drama that mixes science, fantasy, romance and mystery into one story – The King: Eternal Monarch – has been getting some attention due to the fact that it is set in two parallel universes.

At the centre of the series is Emperor Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho) who rules the Kingdom of Corea, and police detective Jung Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun) who lives in another universe, which is similar to the present-day Korea.

One day, a door opens and Lee Gon crosses over to arrive at Tae-eul’s world. As he is a man who is obsessed with maths and science, he figured out where he is pretty quickly.

His suspicion of a parallel universe is further confirmed when he meets the carbon copy of his personal guard (Woo Do-hwan) in this other world, who works at the police station where Tae-eul is.

During a video conference from Seoul, South Korea, Woo, Jung Eun-chae and Kim Kyun-nam – who have supporting roles in the series – were asked if they believe in parallel worlds. Here’s what they said.

Woo Do-hwan

Well, I don't think that the existence of a parallel universe would be good news.

If there is a parallel universe, I would do one of these two things.

First, I would pretend like it doesn’t exist and just get on with my life.

Or second, if anyone around me wanted to take me to the parallel universe then I would join this person, go to the parallel universe, and try to find the other version of me there.

But this scares me too. If this other me is living a better life than me, or a worse life than me, I would be overwhelmed with so many different emotions.

For me, to accept there is a parallel universe is a scary prospect.

I don't personally believe in the existence of a parallel universe, but I did imagine what it would be like if there was a parallel universe.

I thought about what it would be like to have a another world that is, you know, different from the world that I'm living in. And where a second version of Jung Eun-chae exists.

I think it'd be quite terrifying.

Kim Kyung-nam

I don't personally believe in the existence of a parallel world either.

But I also imagined about it. I mean, during filming I imagined about another world like ours.

And if I there's a different version of me in a different world, then it'd be quite fun. I could actually hang out with him and see what he is like, and what his lifestyle is like.

If his lifestyle is alright, I would suggest we switch places for a few days and try out each other's life.
