The 8th edition of the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia will be held in Menara Star, Petaling Jaya on Saturday, March 17. Organised by 42nd Pictures, SSFFA will screen 14 short films shortlisted last year for SSFF, the mother festival in Japan.

Among the films are three Malaysian shorts – Brave, Bus Stop and RM10 – and My Ba's Radio, the winner of the Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition 2016 (PDSFC). The others are from Japan, Russia, France, Ireland, Czech Republic, Myanmar, the Republic of Congo and the UK.

The morning screening starts at 10am, followed by a short talk by SSFFA organiser and 42nd Pictures founder Yasu Tanaka, who lectures on visual storytelling in Japan and Malaysia.

The afternoon session starts at 1pm, followed by a moderated Q&A with the four Malaysian filmmakers – Tusilya, Abhilash, Emir Ezwan, and PDSFC winner Victor Chen Yee Fei, a crisis relief worker who was previously cast in the Hypp TV show I Want To Be A Filmmaker.

Chen's film is about an ailing husband who continues to find connections with his dead wife through an old radio, much to the disapproval of his adult son who has returned to take care of him.

In a press statement, SSFFA announces itself as a qualifying film fest for the Academy Awards, and one of the Asia's largest international short film festivals which takes place in Tokyo.

Close to 7,000 films were submitted in 2017 and 200 were shortlisted for competition at the festival. 42nd Pictures has produced this event in Malaysia for seven years, previously with FINAS and Limkokwing University.

The SSFFA event on Saturday is open to the public and free of charge. Registration starts at 9:30am. For details, contact 42nd Pictures producer Bea Tanaka at 012-5190967. Menara Star address is 15 Jalan 16/11, Phileo Damansara, Petaling Jaya 46350, Selangor.
