Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh is teaming up with Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker on a new short film titled Sandiwara.
The film – written, edited and directed by Baker – was shot in Penang several months ago.
“It was a really wonderful experience,” the 54-year-old director said of his time in Malaysia.
“It was shot in Penang on iPhones … and it was my first creative outlet since Anora,” added Baker, who is currently serving as head jury at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah.
Baker’s Anora swept five trophies at the Oscars earlier this year, including Best Picture and Best Director.

According to trade publication Variety, Sandiwara was made for the fashion house Self-Portrait, founded by Penang-born designer Han Chong.
“Sandiwara is an extension of my pre-existing love for independent cinema, and with the support of Han Chong, Michelle Yeoh, and the many other individuals who helped bring this vision to life, we were able to celebrate Malaysian culture in a big way,” Baker told Variety.
“It was incredible to experience Penang and to have been given the freedom to create a film that goes beyond traditional fashion-and-cinema integration.”
In Sandiwara, Oscar winner Yeoh reportedly plays five different characters. The film is slated for release early next year.
