DANCE: KAMPUNG BARU
Venue: KongsiKL, Jalan Klang Lama, KL
Date: Oct 14 and 15
Raymond Liew Jin Pin, a Malaysian contemporary choreographer who is currently based in Hamburg, Germany, returns for a homecoming dance production called Kampung Baru at KongsiKL, Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 14 and 15.
In this show, which is supported by the Goethe-Institut Malaysia and KongsiKL, the Johor-born Liew delves into the field of traditional Malay, Chinese and Indian dance movements in search of “a new village and a contemporary zone.” His research often focuses on conventions and gender with a focus on South-East Asian bodies.
The Kampung Baru piece – created with three contemporary dancers in Germany – was as part of a 2019 residency programme (K3 Tanzplan at Kampnagel, Hamburg) and it premiered online at the TanzHochDrei digital festival in 2021. In the production notes, the choreographer’s quest is “to reinterpret his cultural roots and embody his biography, to merge old and new, East and West, ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’.”
In Kuala Lumpur, Kampung Baru will be reinterpreted with three Malaysian artists Loke Soh Kim, Harshini Sukumaran and Tai Chun Wai, as well as long-time collaborator music composer Ng Chor Guan to discover new storytelling possibilities through dance and beyond. Guest artist and dramaturg is Jascha Viehstadt. Tickets for Kampung Baru are RM40. Showtime is 9pm.

CONCERT: DISCOVERING MALAYSIAN FOLK MUSIC
Venue: Nero Event Space, PJPAC, 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya
Date: Oct 15
Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia (PWM), a wind orchestra consisting of orchestral musicians, is presenting a unique concert series titled Discovering Malaysian Folk Music at the Nero space at PJPAC, which is a black box setting to experiment and discover new developments in the arts and culture scene.
The PWM repertoire readied up for the stage this Saturday - two shows at 3pm and 7.30pm - includes first listens for works such as Bunga Raya Concert March, Wau Bulan, Merdeka Overture and Lenggang Kangkung Through Time.
"PWM has always been aware that there is lack of traditional folk music resources for wind bands in Malaysia. Local concert bands and brass bands have been struggling in searching great variety of our own traditional folk music when come to participate in annual wind band competition or school domestic events. Wind band music that contains local folk music elements is indeed very scarce or limited. Therefore, we hope to contribute more band compositions to Malaysia folk music repertoires," reads the concert's description.
PWM will be conducted by Eric Lee, and the composers on board are Isaac Chia and Yeo Chow Shern.

SHARINI YOGI: ‘HOLI’ JOURNEY IN ABSTRACTION
Venue: ArtVoice Gallery, Jalan Kovil Hilir, Sentul, KL
Date: ends Oct 22
Your art adventure weekend won't be complete without a visit to the ArtVoice Gallery where Sharini Yogi’s new body of abstraction titled HOLI offers visitors a mysterious yet celebratory feel.
Her works are inspired by the Hindu festival of ‘Holi’ (Festival of Spring), where colour is lifted up to the skies. The artist also explores a hybrid of Jackson Pollock’s drip-dry technique and her own experimental process.
The childlike gestures in her works through manipulation of fluid dynamics, colliding strokes of industrial oil paint and viscosity of the paint play mirrors Holi as water is usually dyed with bright coloured pigments and is then splattered at festivegoers during the celebration.
The exhibition, curated by Stephen Menon, sees Sharini exhibiting 12 large works.
