LISBON: Portuguese football team Benfica and Adidas AG have reportedly agreed a €120mil (US$138.4mil) deal through 2033, making it the biggest sponsorship agreement in Portuguese football.

The six-year agreement also gives Adidas naming rights to Benfica’s training and development centre which will be renamed the Adidas Benfica Campus, the club and the sportswear company said in a joint statement Monday.

The two sides didn’t disclose the value of the deal.

Business newspaper Eco reported that the deal was worth €120mil, without saying how it had managed to obtain the information.

Adidas has supplied Benfica’s kits continuously since the 1997 to 1998 season.

The new deal will cover the Lisbon-based club’s official kits and follows the launch of Benfica’s 2026 to 2027 shirts, which mark the 20th anniversary of the training campus.

Benfica is among Portuguese clubs that have attracted growing interest from foreign investors. Lenore Sports Partners, an investment group based in the United States, acquired a 5.24% stake last year.

Earlier this year, US investor Tim Leiweke sought to buy a 16.4% stake but walked away after Benfica raised concerns over his investments in other European teams.

Founded in 1904, Benfica is one of Portugal’s “Big Three” clubs, alongside FC Porto and Sporting CP.

It plays in the country’s largest stadium and is also well known for having a strong youth academy. — Bloomberg
