KUALA LUMPUR: Tencent Cloud, the cloud business of global technology company Tencent, will establish its first cloud region in Malaysia, comprising up to three availability zones in Johor.
The new cloud region in Malaysia will join Tencent Cloud International’s global infrastructure network, which currently spans 66 availability zones across 23 regions.
This strengthens Tencent’s overall service provision and builds on its leading position in the local financial services industry and the telecommunications sector.
The expansion will enhance Tencent Cloud’s local infrastructure presence, providing enterprises in Malaysia with the secure, resilient foundation needed for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered workflows, data-heavy applications, and the delivery of digital services at scale.
Vice-president of Tencent Cloud and managing director of Tencent Cloud International for Asia-Pacific Bluefin Jiannan Zhao said Malaysia remains a key market in Tencent Cloud’s growth strategy across Asia.
“Through this investment, we aim to deepen our support for Malaysia’s digital transformation journey and contribute to the continued growth of its AI ecosystem.
“For every Malaysian enterprise, this delivers three things: fully localised data compliance, ultra-low latency and resilience for AI and data-intensive workloads, and a smooth cross-border gateway.
“This enables homegrown enterprises like Boost to expand regionally, and supports global enterprises to deepen their Asean footprint,” said Zhao.
In expanding on Tencent Cloud’s customer acquisition in Malaysia, Tencent Cloud International and Malaysia general manager Nucky Fang pointed out that the key is to understand the customer’s business itself, and integrate the requirements of that business with the capabilities of their cloud services.
“It is not really about whether the customer is in gaming, financial services, or another industry.
“Every customer’s business is different. What is important is how quickly we can understand their business and use technology to address their needs,” said Fang.
A new collaboration was also announced with leading homegrown financial technology services provider Boost, to undertake a comprehensive migration of its cloud infrastructure over to Tencent Cloud, in addition to exploring the integration of AI agent solutions with their workflows and service offerings.
Speaking at the Tencent Cloud C-Suite dialogue, Boost group chief executive officer Anthony Sheyantha Abeykoon said the comprehensive cloud migration is expected to benefit Boost’s sprawling customer base in its micro lending business, almost 90% of which comprised micro, small and medium enterprises.
He said the cloud migration is just the start, and that the company will continue to explore future opportunities and innovations with Tencent Cloud.
Tencent Cloud senior vice-president and head of Tencent Cloud International Poshu Yeung said a lot of companies seek out Tencent Cloud because of their technology stack and infrastructure stability.
These stacks include Tencent WorkBuddy, an agentic AI workspace solution that turns a single prompt into a ready-to-use deliverable, handling market research, data analysis, and project planning.
Tencent Cloud’s agent development platform enables enterprises to design, test, and scale custom AI agents for industry-specific use cases, featuring multi-agent collaboration and enterprise-grade security.
Its model-as-a-service platform TokenHub allows enterprises to access, manage, and integrate multiple large language models via a single application programming interface for greater cost and performance optimisation.
Earlier this month, Tencent announced the global availability of Tencent Hy3 (Tencent Hy, formerly known as Tencent Hunyuan), its latest large model that delivers performance comparable to flagship models two to five times its size, while maintaining a practical and cost-efficient profile.
