KUALA LUMPUR: National carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd recorded group sales of 18,156 units in April 2026, bringing total sales for the first four months of the year to 67,298 units, up 40.9% from the same period last year.
In a statement, the automaker said its performance keeps it on track to achieve its 2026 sales target of 200,000 units.
Proton said its year-to-date (YTD) market share is forecast at 26.4%, while April market share is expected to be 25%, as the company continues to outpace industry growth.
Malaysia’s total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have increased 17.7% year-on-year in April, while YTD TIV growth stood at 1.8%.
The Proton Saga remained the group’s top-selling model after deliveries rose 50.9% month-on-month to 8,207 units in April. YTD sales for the model reached 29,977 units, up 42.8% from the same period in 2025.
Meanwhile, the Proton S70 posted its best monthly sales performance since launch with 2,377 units sold in April. Total sales for the first four months rose 32.3% year-on-year to 8,175 units.
The company said demand for the model improved following updates introduced in February, including new exterior styling and the addition of its 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged i-GT engine.
In the SUV segment, sales of the Proton X50 reached 2,603 units in April, bringing YTD sales to 10,174 units.
Sales of the Proton X90 increased 43% in April to 462 units, its best performance since December 2023. Overall, sales for the recently updated 7-seat D-segment SUV are up by 28.1% compared to the previous year.
Proton Edar chief executive officer Datuk Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa said the company’s sales growth was driven by product planning, investments in new technologies, and support from its dealership network.
“Overall, we are on the right path to achieve our targets for 2026 and with more launches and new initiatives in the pipeline for this year and the next few years beyond, Proton hopes to be able to position itself as the best choice for Malaysian car buyers as well as the country’s leading export OEM,” he added.
Meanwhile, Proton e.MAS, the new energy vehicle arm of Proton, sold a record 3,420 EV and PHEV units in April 2026, bringing YTD sales to 11,664 units for the first four months of the year.
Proton e.MAS 5 remained Malaysia’s best-selling EV with 1,771 units sold in April and 8,473 units delivered YTD, while the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV retained its position as the country’s top-selling PHEV after recording 1,013 units in its second full month of sales.
