OMS Group inks deal with Ulstein for two next-generation cable-laying vessels

OMS Group is expanding its GREAT-class fleet with two next-generation cable-laying vessels from Ulstein

KUALA LUMPUR: OMS Group, a leading provider of subsea digital infrastructure, has signed contracts with advanced offshore vessel builder Ulstein for the design and construction of two cable-laying vessels.

The two new vessels will join OMS Group’s GREAT-Class Fleet, bringing the current total of new committed/under construction vessels to four.

OMS Group, which has a portfolio investment of more than US$800mil, said in a statement the deal marks the next chapter in its fleet expansion strategy and will help it meet surging global demand for high-capacity submarine cable systems.

OMS Group CEO Ronnie Lim said the accelerating demand for global connectivity makes fleet capacity a critical constraint for the industry.

"These vessels significantly enhance our ability to execute complex submarine cable installations reliably and at scale, positioning OMS Group strongly for the next phase of global digital infrastructure growth," he added.

The new vessels, scheduled to come into service in 2028, will be purpose-built to deliver not only superior installation capabilities, but have a key focus on sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

According to the group's statement, the vessels will feature cutting-edge engineering and operational efficiencies, ensuring the best possible deployment of subsea networks, with the lowest environmental impact available in the market.

"This latest expansion reflects OMS Group’s clear strategic direction, to invest and build a future-ready fleet that underpins the rapidly expanding global digital economy," said OMS Group founder and chairman Datuk Lim Soon Foo.
