KUALA LUMPUR: Malakoff Corp Bhd said operations at the Tanjung Bin Power Plant and the Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant, both located within Tanjung Bin Complex in Johor, are continuing as normal following Saturday's accident that killed two and injured three others.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company reiterated that occupational safety and integrity of its operations remain its highest priority and it is committed to strict compliance of all applicable safety measures at all times.

On Dec 13, there was an incident involving one of the five coal unloaders of Tanjung Bin Complex Jetty (CUL 20) during scheduled maintenance work by a contractor.

The company said the plant’s emergency response team and Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department had responded to the incident.

"Despite all the rescue efforts, the incident regrettably resulted in two fatalities and three injuries (one of whom had since been discharged and allowed to return home while the remaining two are still being hospitalised), all of whom were the contractor’s personnel," it said.

The affected area of the jetty has been secured as a precautionary measure and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health has issued a notice of prohibition against the said CUL 20 and its adjacent grab unloader (GUL 10), until the completion of necessary remedial actions to be instructed by DOSH.

"In addition to conducting its own internal investigations, the company has been co-operating fully and working closely with DOSH in its ongoing investigations to determine the root cause of the incident."
