KUALA LUMPUR: The development of a new berth in the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), named Berth Zero, has been awarded to a joint venture between MMC Engineering Sdn Bhd and Antara Ko (M) Sdn Bhd.

The 360m berth, which serves as an extension within the port's undeveloped land bank, will be located PTP’s linear wharf, equipped with four quay cranes and a yard fully prepared for electric rubber-tyred gantry (e-RTG) cranes.

PTP said the award of the project followed a transparent and competitive tender process, with all qualified bidders evaluated on technical strength, safety performance and delivery capability in line with industry best practices.

PTP is a 70:30 joint venture between utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corp Bhd and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, a premier global ports group.

According to PTP chairman Tan Sri Khalib Mohamad Noh, PTP's key expansion plan serves to optimise its existing footprint, with the aim of increasing the terminal's total handling capacity to about 16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) over the next two and half years.

PTP CEO Mark Hardiman added that Berth Zero represents PTP’s next major expansion since the completion of Berths 13 and 14 in 2014.

"Through strategic partnership and sustainable expansion, this initiative signifies a renewed focus on capacity building, future-proofs the port’s infrastructure and reinforces our position as a leading transshipment hub, reflecting our readiness to turn plans into action, collaboration into progress and vision into value for the future of PTP and Malaysia’s maritime ambitions,” he said in a statement.
