JAKARTA: The government has announced plans to establish six new special economic zones (SEZs) covering various industries, from the halal sector to electric vehicles (EVs).

Susiwijono “Susi” Moegiarso, Secretary to the Coordinating Economic Minister, said six SEZs were awaiting the issuance of their respective government regulations, including one in Sidoarjo, East Java, which is designated to focus on the halal products industry.

“The halal SEZ in Sidoarjo will offer vast potential to integrate Indonesia into global halal industry supply chains,” he said in a press statement on Tuesday.

Susi revealed that another of the new SEZs, to be located in Subang, West Java, would focus on augmenting the country’s budding EV ecosystem, with Chinese investors like major EV manufacturer BYD interested in investing in the area, Bisnis reported.

However, he did not elaborate on the remaining four new SEZs or the industries they would focus on, saying only that they would be announced once the respective government regulations were issued.

These SEZs cover a total area of 23,798 ha, with seven situated on Java Island and 18 in other regions of the country. — The Jakarta Post/ANN
