PETALING JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd’s year-on-year car sales doubled to 9,643 units in November, driven by strong demand for its Saga model.
In a statement yesterday, the national carmaker said cumulative volume for the year stood at 89,476 units as at November, which marked a 50.1% growth in total year-on-year numbers.
“Market share has also grown and is estimated to now be at 16.2% for the whole of 2019, ” it said.
Proton said last month was the third consecutive month that it had sold more than 4,000 units of the Saga, having delivered 4,091 units in November.
“This allowed Proton’s newest model to return to the top of the A-segment sedan sales table and with 34,422 sold so far in 2019, its volume growth now stands at an impressive 32%, by far the best for any model in the segment.”
In the same statement, Proton chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong said the Saga has been a big success for Proton since its launch in August.
“In just four months, we have already achieved more than 35,000 bookings and currently, every unit our factory can deliver has been spoken for.
“Our challenge therefore is to increase our production capacity for the Saga and we have had intensive discussions with our vendors to work towards a volume increase next year, ” he said.
Separately, Li said more than 2,000 units of the Proton X70 sport utility vehicle (SUV) were sold last month.
“The uptrend shows customers are still keenly interested in the most intelligent SUV on sale and we target to grow that interest in the coming year.”
The strong sales have been reflected in the financial performance of Proton’s parent company, DRB-HICOM BHD, which recorded a net profit of RM40.08mil for its third quarter ended Sept 30, compared with a net loss of RM11.42mil in the previous corresponding period.
Proton is targeting to sell 100,000 vehicles this year.
