PHNOM PENH: Cambodia registered 16,926 electric vehicles (EVs) between 2021 and August 2026, according to a Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) report released Tuesday.
MPWT spokesperson Phan Rim told Xinhua that the Southeast Asian nation saw a significant surge in EV registrations starting in March 2026, largely driven by conflicts in the Middle East that pushed global fuel prices upward.
According to the report, approximately 6,563 EVs were registered between March and August of this year.
By the end of August, the kingdom's total electric fleet also included 4,974 electric motorcycles and 893 electric three-wheelers.
Thong Mengdavid, deputy director at the China-ASEAN Studies Center of the Cambodia University of Technology and Science, said the rapid adoption of electric mobility brings immediate ecological advantages.
"Widespread EV adoption immediately benefits Cambodia's urban micro-environments by drastically lowering localized air pollution and improving air quality in dense areas," he told Xinhua.
