Over 70% of Filipinos keep positive perception of safety: survey

MANILA: A majority of adult Filipinos, or 72 per cent, feel safe in their homes and communities, according to a survey released Tuesday (Aug 25).

The survey by OCTA Research, conducted from July 4 to 11 with 1,200 respondents, found that 68 per cent are not afraid to walk alone at night, while 54 per cent are not worried about robbers breaking into their homes.

However, confidence varied by region. The Visayas recorded the highest sense of neighbourhood safety at 84 per cent, while Metro Manila recorded the lowest at 58 per cent.

Confidence in walking alone at night was highest in Balance Luzon at 72 per cent and lowest in Metro Manila at 48 per cent. Home security confidence was also lowest in Metro Manila at 44 per cent, according to OCTA, a renowned independent private research and consulting institution in the Philippines.

OCTA said general perceptions of safety remain positive, but respondents showed more caution when considering specific personal and household security risks. - Xinhua
