BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei Darussalam has experienced 14 consecutive days of excessive hot weather this month, with temperatures reaching as high as 38.2 degrees Celsius at several automatic weather stations, according to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD).
The excessive hot weather was recorded from Aug 8 to 21, with Labi recording the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.2C.
Other locations also recorded temperatures above 35C, including Anggerek Desa at 37.5C, Kuala Belait at 36.7C, Lakiun and Pekan Bangar at 36.5C, Bandar Seri Begawan at 36.2C, Sinaut at 35.9C, and Lumapas and Benutan at 35.8C.
As of Friday (Aug 21), one area – Anggerek Desa – recorded excessive hot weather, while 10 other areas recorded unusual hot weather.
These were Brunei International Airport, Bandar Seri Begawan, Benutan, Kuala Belait, Labi, Lakiun, Lumapas, Pekan Bangar, Pekan Tutong and Sinaut.
The country is currently experiencing the Southwest Monsoon, which typically persists until the end of September.
During this period, atmospheric conditions over Brunei generally become more stable, resulting in relatively hot and dry weather with fewer showers and thunderstorms.
No significant rainfall has been recorded at the Meteorological Observation Station at Brunei International Airport since Aug 6.
The total rainfall recorded for August so far stands at 117.8 millimetres, approximately 51 per cent below the normal monthly average of 231.5mm.
The BDMD forecast indicates hot and dry conditions with minimal rainfall activity are expected to persist until the end of the month.
Slightly hazy conditions are also expected due to transboundary haze, while maximum daily temperatures are forecast to range between 33C and 36C.
