BEIJING: China’s Ministry of Public Security announced on Thursday (Aug 13) that Chinese and Thai police had recently worked together to dismantle a major cross-border credit card fraud gang targeting Chinese citizens.
The operation led to the arrest of nine suspects: four Chinese nationals and five Thai nationals.
The operation was carried out jointly by China’s Ministry of Public Security and the Royal Thai Police.
Both sides coordinated the timing of the crackdown, raided several locations linked to the alleged offences and arrested the suspects.
Chinese police uncovered the transnational criminal network in 2025, promptly shared information about the case with Thai police and requested their co-operation in taking action.
The investigation found that two suspects had planned the scheme together.
One is alleged to have opened a shop in Thailand as a front for stealing victims’ credit card details.
The other is alleged to have used the stolen information to make counterfeit cards and recruited others to carry out fraudulent transactions with them and launder the illicit proceeds for profit.
Authorities have so far identified more than 5 million yuan in financial losses linked to the case, equivalent to about THB24.58 million.
This was the first joint law-enforcement operation by Chinese and Thai police in several years to target economic crime.
The two sides will also consider establishing a regular co-operation mechanism to combat cross-border economic crime, with plans to deepen co-operation in information sharing, exchanges of expertise, joint analysis, tracking suspects and recovering illicit assets. - Xinhua
