A Singaporean court has jailed a Hong Kong mother and her adult son for up to six months following a chaotic clash at Changi Airport, during which the pair attacked a police officer and a bystander.
Chan Sui-kwan, 65, was reportedly sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on Monday for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, while her son, Chan Wing-kwan, 42, was handed a 10-day jail term for voluntarily causing hurt.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 30, 2024, at the airport’s terminal 3.
According to court documents, the son became agitated after mistakenly believing bystanders were mocking him, leading him to kick his mother.
When a 69-year-old bystander stepped in to check on the woman, she told him to leave, while her son aggressively challenged him to a fight.
The situation escalated shortly after on another floor of the terminal, where the son kicked his mother again. When the bystander attempted to call police, the son rushed towards him.
A scuffle ensued, during which the son repeatedly punched the man, leaving him with a head haematoma – a type of bruise involving pooled blood – knee abrasions and bruised fingers.
Police investigated at the scene and recorded the mother and son’s passport details before returning the documents.
Later that afternoon, officers again found the pair in the departure hall, where the mother was said to have refused to hand over her passport and caused a disturbance before being arrested.
As officers moved to arrest her, she resisted fiercely. An officer was bitten on his right forearm through his clothing, leaving a 1cm mark and bruising.
The mother was brought to court on November 18, 2024, while her son was charged on April 24 last year.
Both reportedly missed a scheduled court date on July 22 this year, triggering an arrest warrant before they were convicted on July 29 and sentenced on Monday. -- SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
