BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Malaysia’s Jude King was crowned champion of the International Chess Day 2026 tournament organised by the Brunei Chess Federation at the Brunei Chess Centre in the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, Berakas, on July 19.
The tournament attracted 42 participants from Brunei, England, Malaysia and India, competing across several age groups.
Awangku Hafidzon bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Omar finished second, while Awangku Abdul Wafie Ikhwan bin Pengiran Shahridin secured third place overall.
In the age-group categories, Muhd Khayri Zaim of St John’s School in Belait District won the Under-12 category.
Malaysia’s Stallone Ting topped the Under-14 category, while Khaizuran bin Rezuan of Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic High School won the Under-18 category.
The Best Female Player award went to Women’s FIDE Master Siti Nur Fatimah Al-Zuhra binti Haji Azahari.
Brunei Chess Federation vice-president Pengiran Abdul Rahman bin Pengiran Lela Wijaya Pengiran Haji Yussof presented the prizes.
Meanwhile, another tournament will be held on July 26 in conjunction with the 80th birthday celebrations of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
