BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, yesterday conducted the 27th National Weather Briefing at the Auditorium Hall of the Information Department.

The event was attended by 88 representatives from government agencies, the private sector and the members of the public. The National Weather Briefing was presented by Meteorological Officer Hassanul Kamal bin Haji Adam with a focus on the Southwest Monsoon and upcoming Inter-monsoon period.

The National Weather Briefing is one of the department’s ongoing initiatives to foster engagement with a wide range of user groups, such as those from First and Safety Responders, Economic and Industry groups, construction companies, insurance companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as from the mass media.

The main goal of the National Weather Briefing is to increase the understanding and awareness of various user groups and the public towards the current and the expected weather conditions of Brunei Darussalam. This briefing also serves to support early preparedness and planning in response to varying weather conditions.

The 27th National Weather Briefing was focusing on the weather conditions, climate outlook, and the long-range forecasts for the Southwest Monsoon, which has begun at the end of May 2026 and is expected to persist until the end of September 2026, as well as the inter-monsoon period from October until the end of November 2026.

During Southwest Monsoon, the atmospheric conditions over our country tend to be more stable with a reduction in localised thundershowers activity.

Southwest Monsoon is also synonymous with the season of active development of tropical storm and typhoon systems over the Northwest Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.

The influence of tropical storm or typhoon systems nearby our region may results in the formation of squall line phenomena which bring unsettled weather conditions, including gusty winds and occasional thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the inter-monsoon period is characterised by generally fair weather in the morning and isolated coastal showers around midday. The frequency of thunderstorms occurrences is high during this inter-monsoon period compared to other months, especially over the inland areas in the afternoon, spreading to the coastal and sea areas at night, and may persist into the early morning of the following day.

Monthly precipitation in Brunei Darussalam is forecasted to be within Slightly Below Normal range (140-190 mm) for June and July 2026, and Below Normal (≤ 140 mm) in August 2026. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
