TOKYO: Two Vietnamese nationals have been arrested on suspicion of trespassing and attempted theft at the house where a family of four was murdered in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, in December 2000, the Metropolitan Police Department announced on Thursday (May 14).

According to police, a 32-year-old male construction worker and a 28-year-old man are suspected of breaking a window near the entrance of the house sometime between September 2023 and December 2025, in an attempt to steal valuables. They were arrested on Wednesday.

During questioning, the two defendants allegedly admitted to the charges. They reportedly said they were trying to supplement their living expenses and did not know the house was a crime scene.

The incident came to light in December 2025 when investigators visited the house, and an investigation was launched.

The two men arrived in Japan in 2023 under the technical intern training programme, but their visas expired in 2025. They had already been indicted for violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law. - The Japan News/ANN
