VIENTIANE: The government has introduced stricter entry requirements for foreign tourists, instructing tour operators to submit confirmed hotel reservations covering the entire duration of a visitor’s stay in Laos, as part of new security measures aimed at upgrading tourism management.
According to a notice issued on May 12 by the Ministry of Public Security, all tourism operators arranging inbound travel must now attach hotel booking confirmation documents from the date tourists arrive in Laos until their departure date when applying for permission to bring visitors into the country.
The ministry said the move is part of efforts to integrate tourist accommodation information into a modern management system in line with the government’s new policy on tourism.
Authorities say the tighter screening measures are intended to strengthen security, improve visitor management, and ensure Laos remains a “peaceful and safe” destination, while enhancing the country’s image among international travellers.
Under the new ruling, all previously required application documents will remain unchanged, with the hotel reservation confirmation added as an extra requirement.
The ministry instructed tourism businesses nationwide to strictly comply with the order.
The tougher regulations come as Laos experiences a sharp rise in international tourism following gradual post-pandemic recovery.
According to the Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Laos welcomed 4,580,709 international visitors last year, marking an 11 percent increase compared to 2024.
The country’s tourism rebound has accelerated steadily. In 2024 alone, Laos attracted more than 4.1 million foreign visitors, nearly one million more than in 2023.
The rapid growth has earned Laos international recognition, with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation ranking the country among the world’s fastest-growing holiday destinations.
Thailand, Vietnam and China remain the three largest sources of visitors to Laos.
At the same time, Laos has increasingly gained attention as a budget-friendly destination.
The Indie Traveller magazine listed Laos among the “26 Amazing Cheap Places You Should Travel to in 2026”, noting that travellers can explore the country on an average budget of about US$25 per day.
While authorities believe the stricter entry process will improve tourism management and safety standards, the new requirement may also create additional burdens for tour operators and independent travellers, particularly those who prefer flexible or spontaneous travel plans. - Vientiane Times/ANN
