YANGON: Three Chinese nationals allegedly involved in online scam gambling have been arrested along with equipment used in the operation in Mongyai Township, northern Shan State, according to reports.
The government has been intensifying efforts to combat online scams and online scam gambling as part of a national-level campaign. Authorities have been targeting operations based particularly in border areas while also taking action against individuals involved in such activities inside the country.
In the latest operation, military columns conducting security operations in Mongyai Township arrested three Chinese nationals suspected of operating an online scam gambling business, along with equipment used for the operation.
According to information provided by local residents, individuals involved in online scam gambling had established temporary shelters in the area to conduct their activities. Following the information, security personnel carried out further investigations and security operations.
On Aug 26, the three Chinese men, who had allegedly entered Myanmar illegally across the border, were arrested approximately 26,000m southeast of Mongyai and about 5,000m south of Manphai Village.
Authorities seized one 50-by-20-foot corrugated iron-roofed building with bamboo walls and five temporary tarpaulin shelters of various sizes. They also seized 25 mobile phones, five all-in-one computers, two power stations, one Starlink device, 10 communication radios and other equipment related to the operation.
The arrested suspects will face action under existing laws after the completion of questioning and investigations. The seized equipment will be handled in accordance with established procedures.
Authorities also said that illegally constructed residential and operational shelters would be systematically dismantled and destroyed. Efforts to prevent online scam gambling operations from establishing a foothold and to eliminate such activities entirely will continue, according to the report. - Eleven Media/ANN
