Myanmar revokes licences of three news agencies

YANGON: Myanmar’s Ministry of Information has announced the revocation of media licences for Myaelatt Athan, Red News Agency and Asia Citizens News Agency.

According to the ministry, under Section 6(b) of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise Law, authorities may revoke or temporarily suspend a publishing licence if there is credible evidence that a publication has violated provisions under Section 8 of the law.

The ministry stated that action can be taken following an official complaint or if authorities independently discover suspected violations, after conducting an investigation in accordance with regulations.

The ministry said that Myaelatt Athan, operated by Ye Thwin Hein, Red News Agency, operated by Win Zaw Naing, and Asia Citizens News Agency, operated by Zin Min Htet, failed to comply with provisions under Section 8(b) of the law.

Authorities accused the agencies of publishing and distributing content deemed harmful to national security, the rule of law, and public peace and stability.

As a result, the ministry announced that the news agency licences issued to the three outlets were revoked effective April 23, 2026.

The statement also warned the agencies against publishing or broadcasting content through any form of media or technology platform. - Eleven Media/ANN
