Thai, Laos nationals given life for 100kg opium bust

PHNOM PENH: The Stung Treng Provincial Court has sentenced two Thai men and one Lao man to life in prison in connection with the trafficking of nearly 100 kilogrammes of raw opium.

An April 29 statement from the Stung Treng Provincial Court of First Instance announced that Thai nationals Hanawat Wonghiranya, born 1982, and Witsanu Saiboot, born 1975, along with Tong Thor, born 1995, from Laos, were each sentenced to life imprisonment and fined 50 million riel (US$12,500) for the transportation of raw opium.

The narcotics were seized at three locations, in Stung Treng province’s Borei Ou Svay Senchey district and Kratie’s Chet Borei district, as well as the provincial capital of Preah Sihanouk.
