BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Eight members of the Brunei contingent departed on Saturday (April 18) to compete in the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, set to take place from April 22 to 30.
Brunei Darussalam national contingent of four athletes comprises three male and one female athletes and four officials, including Pengiran Abdul Raub Pengiran Ghani as Chef de Mission of the contingent together with Nur ‘Iffah Natasha Sofea Abdullah as Head of Secretariat/Safeguarding Officer/Prevention of Manipulation of Competition Officer, and coaches.
Brunei Darussalam will compete in beach athletics and teqball.
Beach Athletics athletes, Abdul Aqil Abdul Kadir and Qurratul Ain Irwan will compete in the beach long jump event while Teqball athletes APO L/KP6565 Ismail Ang and Mohammad Hanis Hidayatullah Abdullah will compete in the men’s doubles event.
Director of Youth and Sports Umi Kalthum Abdul Karim was present to bid farewell along with senior officers from the Department of Youth and Sports, National Sports Associations and members of the contingent’s families.
Pengiran Abdul Raub said, “We hope that our athletes will give their best to compete at the highest level against athletes from Asia.”
He added, “This is the first time that Brunei is competing in the Teqball event in Beach Games. They competed in the World Teqball championship in China last year. This time will be different because they will compete on the beach which is a new environment and under the hot sun. I hope they will do their best.”
He shared, “In term of preparation, the athletes have been involved in intensive training. Even before getting conformation to represent the country, the athletes have been continuously training.” - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
