Myanmar, China discuss investment in aging oil fields and refinery projects

YANGON: Myanmar and China have held discussions on potential investments in deep drilling operations at Myanmar’s aging oil fields, as well as the construction of oil refineries.

Union Minister for Energy Ko Ko Lwin, accompanied by Myanmar Ambassador to China Zaw Win Myint, visited China on April 13 and 14.

During the trip, they met with officials from China Railway Beijing Engineering Group Co., Ltd., MEIGE Joint Energy Holding Co., Ltd., and Yunnan-Irrawaddy Supply Chain.

At the meetings, Chinese companies inquired about investment opportunities in Myanmar’s electricity and energy sector. Discussions covered plans to carry out deep drilling in mature oil fields, invest in refinery construction, and develop renewable energy projects, including solar power.

Both sides also exchanged views on cooperation across the supply chain for importing crude oil and petroleum products, aimed at strengthening Myanmar’s energy security.

The Myanmar delegation invited the companies to visit the country to assess on-ground conditions and continue detailed discussions. - Eleven Media/ANN
